Fujitsu LifeBook MH330 Review

Fujitsu has debuted a sleek and slim netbook, the LifeBook MH330, which promises to be a “road warrior,” ready to be toted around anywhere without weighing down your bag down.

Boasting to be one of the slimmest mini-notebooks in its class, the LifeBook MH330 weighs 2.4 pounds and measuring 0.73-inches up front and 0.96-inches in the back. Some of the additional design specs that make this a travel-friendly netbook include a spill-resistant keyboard and a DVD sharing app supports sharing an optical disk drive on other computers via Wi-Fi.

Fujitsu managed to pack some decent specs into that tiny frame as well, making the netbook light but still keeping you productive. Here’s some of what you can expect with the MH330:

Gateway LT21 Review

Relative newcomer (or long-absent veteran, whichever you prefer) Gateway is set to release its first netbook on Aussie shores, the LT21. At first glance, there isn’t much to get excited about in the specs list: a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, 10.1-inch screen with 1024 x 600-pixel resolution and a 250GB hard drive, but hidden amongst its 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1wireless options is the surprising gem of built-in 3G – still a rarity in netbooks. We weren’t able to confirm whether this will be tied to any particular 3G carrier, but in any event it adds welcome flexibility for using this netbook for web surfing and email on the go – especially when paired with the respectable 10-hour battery life. The LT21 is also quite the looker, with the lid available in black, red or white, an inlaid wave pattern and engraved silver logo. Recommended retail price is $599.

Netbook market grew 79% last year

Netbook shipments jumped 79 percent last year to 30.2 million units, according to research firm Strategy Analytics–and the market is poised to continue growing this year. The research firm said North America and Western Europe propelled the market’s growth. In the U.S., carriers including AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel have begun subsidizing netbooks (with the buy of a two-year mobile data plot) and carrying the devices in their retail outlets. Thus, along with smartphones and data cards, netbooks with built-in wide area wireless have helped fuel mobile data traffic growth. The carriers have been selling netbooks for between $150 and $200 when paired with a two-year data plot contract.

According to Strategy Analytics, the top netbook vendors were Acer, Asus, HP, and Dell. “This category is poised for further growth in 2010, as chipset makers battle for dominance in the portable device segment,” Strategy Analytics analyst Peter King said in a statement. “Intel, Qualcomm, Nvidia and others will continue to push new processors that promise to do more, while taking up less space and consuming less power.”

In light of such growth, it’s no surprise that the netbook market has become crowded. Late last year, the world’s top handset maker Nokia entered the market with its Booklet 3G, which AT&T launched for $300 and a two-year contract. Apple is also aiming to upend the netbook market with its iPad tablet, which it will start selling in the coming months beginning at $500. At the iPad’s unveiling, Apple CEO Steve Jobs disparaged netbooks as insufficient to do Web browsing, email, and handle photos, video and music. “Netbooks aren’t better at anything,” Jobs said. “They are just cheap laptops.”
